The story

Kathlaur Kushlian Wildlife Sanctuary lies about 25 km from Pathankot, on the banks of the Ravi. Declared a sanctuary in 2007, it covers roughly 1,867 acres of closed-canopy forest, open grassland and several water bodies, and is managed chiefly for deer and other hoofed animals. The river frontage makes it good ground for both resident and migratory birds.

Four kinds of deer are found here: chital, sambar, hog deer and barking deer. Birdlife includes grey and white partridges, white-rumped vultures, parakeets and spotted owls. The reserve is divided into core, buffer and eco-sensitive zones; visitors are allowed only in the eco-sensitive zone, on trails past streams and thick woodland, while the core is left to the wildlife. The sanctuary also runs nature education programmes for visitors and nearby villages.
