The story

Kamleshwar Mahadev Temple is a Shiva temple at Lakheri in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan, sometimes called a mini-Khajuraho. It stands near the Chakan river amid dense forest, with Indragarh Fort and the Bijasan Mata Temple close by. Believed to date from the 12th century, it is said to have been built by King Hammiradeva after Mahadeva appeared to him in a dream, and a legend ties its lingam to Ravana's failed attempt to take Shiva's Atmalinga to Lanka. The Archaeological Survey of India protects it.

The sanctum holds the lingam, with a pillared mandapa and open courtyard around it, and walls, pillars and sculptures are carved with deities and mythological scenes. On the hill to the right is a stone workshop with unfinished statues and carving marks on boulders, and coins of Hammiradeva's time, pottery and stone tools have been found nearby. More than 100,000 pilgrims, many from Madhya Pradesh, come to bathe in the holy pond on the Pradosha before each Amavasya.
