The story

Ranthambore National Park in Sawai Madhopur district is one of India's best-known places to see the Bengal tiger. The wider protected area covers about 1,334 sq km, of which some 392 sq km is national park, in a setting of rugged hills and dry forest.

Tigers here are often seen in daylight, which draws wildlife enthusiasts from around the world during the safari season. Deer, peafowl and many other birds are also common on drives. The park's most famous resident was the tigress Machli, nicknamed the Queen of the Jungle, who appeared in numerous documentaries, films and television programmes before her death in August 2016.
