Mehandipur Balaji is a temple to Hanuman, known here as Balaji, in the hills of Dausa district. For centuries it has drawn pilgrims who come not only to worship but in search of healing, believing that the deity can cure illness, drive away evil spirits and bring peace to troubled minds.
Local tradition holds that the image of Hanuman appeared on its own in the hills long ago. The building is modest, in a traditional Rajasthani style with stone walls and tall spires. In the sanctum Balaji is flanked by Pret Raj Sarkar and Kotwal Bhairav, two deities who stand for protection and justice. The rituals of spiritual cleansing held here are more intense than those of most temples, and many devotees keep strict vows before they arrive. The Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri lies in the same district.
