01 — The story

The story

Bhadrawati Palace is a palace-fort in the village of Bhandarej in Dausa district, a short way off the old road between Jaipur and Agra. It is credited to Dhula Rao, a chieftain of the Kachhwaha clan, in the 11th century, and it long served as a fortified seat of local rule.

Since 1994 the building has operated as a heritage hotel, and it is also used for weddings and photo shoots. Its design pairs Rajput strength with Mughal-style refinement: thick stone ramparts and courtyards enclose arched corridors, carved jali screens and decorated pillars, and many rooms look out over the surrounding farmland. Concealed passages run through the building, and a tunnel is said to link the palace with the village stepwell.
