01 — The story

The story

Ranthambore Fort rises about 700 feet above the forests of Ranthambore National Park in Sawai Madhopur district, land that later became a hunting reserve of the Jaipur maharajas. It was founded in the 10th century under the Chauhan king Sapaldaksha and passed to the Ghurids in 1192; later rulers, including the Mughals, added their own buildings.

The climb leads through seven gateways, among them Ganesh Pol and Andheri Pol, to stone paths, domed structures and heavy walls on the summit, with long views over the park. Since 2013 the fort has been part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan UNESCO World Heritage Site. Birdlife is rich, and langurs are often seen among the ruins.
