The story

This memorial on the Diu coast honours the crew of INS Khukri, an Indian Navy warship struck by torpedoes from an enemy submarine and sunk during the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. Its commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Mahendra Nath Mulla, stayed at his post despite serious wounds so that his men could get off the ship.

Built of granite and marble, the structure takes the shape of a ship's hull, with a 15-metre mast flying a flag and a plaque recording the names of the sailors who died. A small museum inside covers Indian Navy history and the ship's final action through exhibits and models.
