01 — The story

The story

Zampa Gateway, sometimes called the Diu Fort Gate, is the chief entrance through the old city wall of Diu town and has stood for more than 400 years. Painted deep red, it carries carvings of lions, angels and a priest that mix Indian and European styles. Just inside is a chapel holding an image of the Virgin Mary and Child dated 1702, with an artificial waterfall beside it.

Many stories surround the gate. One says a Brahmin priest cursed it in protest at Portuguese rule, bringing death to soldiers who tried to pass. Another credits Khwaja Syed Fakhruddin with raising it in a single night with the help of genies. Others say it was a site of public executions in Portuguese times, and that gold coins fired from cannons during a siege were later found nearby.
