01 — The story

The story

St. Paul's Church in Diu, also called the Church of the Immaculate Conception, had its foundation stone laid on 7 April 1601 under Governor Duarte de Melo, with Father Manuel Fernandes as parish priest. It was first meant to house a Jesuit seminary, and it still holds weekly Mass for the town's Christian community.

The church has two carved bell towers, a vaulted stone dome and a wooden entrance door carved with scenes from scripture. Inside are three altars and a pulpit of black wood thought to have been brought from Mozambique, a statue of Mary of the Immaculate Conception over the main altar, and fourteen Stations of the Cross. Local legend speaks of tunnels linking it to Diu Fort.
