The story

The Hyderabad Botanical Garden, officially the Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Botanical Garden, lies at Kothaguda, Kondapur, near HITEC City, about 16 km from Hyderabad railway station on the old Hyderabad–Mumbai highway. Developed by the Telangana Forest Department to conserve plant germplasm and educate the public, it bears the name of a former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister.

The garden spreads over 270 acres of undulating ground divided into 19 sections, or vanams, of which the first phase is open. Sections cover medicinal plants, timber and fruit trees, ornamentals, aquatic plants, bamboos and palms; the bamboo and palm areas are the chief attractions, with each bamboo variety signposted with its scientific name. Paved walkways pass water bodies, meadows, woodland and rock formations, and flowers such as cosmos and blue salvia grow in profusion. Nakshatra, Rasi and Navagraha Vanams opened in 2018. Tents are available for longer stays, and over 150 bird species have been recorded, among them fantails, wagtails, flycatchers and bulbuls.
