Khajaguda Lake, also called Thavutoni Kunta or Wipro Lake, lies on the western edge of Hyderabad near Manikonda. It was built in 1897 under the 6th Nizam, Mahboob Ali Khan, and once spread over 618 acres, watering 900 acres of farmland; encroachment, roads and sewage have since cut it to about 37 acres and left it polluted, though it once hosted migratory birds. Wipro has taken on its rejuvenation as a CSR project, and volunteers have held shore clean-ups.
South of the lake rise the Khajaguda Hills, or Fakhruddin Gutta, a 180-acre prehistoric heritage site of granite formations said to be 2.5 billion years old, popular for hiking and bouldering. On the hills are the tomb of Hazrat Baba Fakhruddin Aulia, spiritual mentor of the Bahmani founder Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah, buried here in 1353, an Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple said to be over 800 years old, and a cave where Meher Baba meditated.
