The Premamati Mosque, also called the Ibrahim Bagh Mosque or Qutb Shahi Masjid, stands on a rocky hillock along Osman Sagar Road in Hyderabad's Ibrahim Bagh area. It was commissioned under Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah (r. 1550–1580) as the Friday mosque of a new city planned west of Golconda Fort; the plan was dropped for want of water, and his successor founded Hyderabad by the Musi in 1591. Built in the 1560s, the mosque stood half-finished for decades until it was completed in the early 17th century as a smaller prototype of the Makkah Masjid, begun in 1617, to test huge granite arches and domeless vaults.
The name links it with Premamati, a Hindu consort of Abdullah Qutb Shah buried at the nearby Qutb Shahi Tombs, though no inscription confirms the connection. A path climbs through the 11-acre site to a square terrace 143 feet across, and the eastern hall has five arches on carved piers. Renovated in 2016, it is on UNESCO's tentative list with the Deccan Sultanate monuments.
