The story

Mir Alam Tank is a reservoir south of the Musi river in Hyderabad, named after Mir Alam Bahadur, prime minister of Hyderabad State under the third Nizam. He laid its foundation on 20 July 1804 and it was finished on 8 June 1806, reportedly planned by Michel Joachim Marie Raymond. Its dam is made of 21 semicircular masonry arches, said to have been designed by a French engineering firm, and until Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar were built it was the city's main source of drinking water.

Today the water is heavily polluted and no longer drunk, and encroachment has halved the lake's area since 1967 to about 260 acres. The Nehru Zoological Park lies alongside, and Telangana Tourism runs boats on the lake, entered through the zoo. A Mir Alam Park with a Deccani theme, 3D paintings and a planned science park is being built on its banks.
