Nehru Zoological Park, the Hyderabad Zoo, covers about 380 acres beside the Mir Alam Tank, a reservoir some 200 years old regarded as the first multi-arch masonry dam anywhere. Set up in 1959, the zoo was the first in India to keep its animals in open enclosures arranged in zoological order. Breeding and conservation work covers the gharial, Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion and Indian rhino, and the grounds are plastic-free.
A caged bus takes visitors through the lion safari park, and other safaris pass spotted deer, blackbuck, nilgai and sambar. There is a nocturnal animal house, a snake house with more than 40 species, a natural history museum, a dinosaur park and a toy train. Other residents include the lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, sarus crane, orangutan and hippopotamus. An adopt-an-animal scheme is run, and a full visit can take six to seven hours.
