The story

The Heritage Jail Museum, the former Sangareddy District Jail, occupies a prison built in 1796 under Salar Jung I during Nizam rule in Hyderabad State. The jail closed in 2012, and in June 2016 the prison department turned it into a museum showing paintings and objects about Indian prisons and crime.

Its best-known feature is the 'Feel The Jail' programme, devised by Deputy SP M. Lakshmi Narasimha, in which members of the public can live as prisoners for 24 hours for ₹500. Participants wear uniform, eat prison food, do labour such as gardening and are scolded by guards; phones go into a locker at the start, and anyone who wants to leave early pays a fine.
