Gurudwara Bangla Sahib occupies the site of Jaisinghpura Palace, the home of the Rajput ruler Raja Jai Singh. Guru Har Krishan, the eighth Sikh Guru, stayed there in 1664 during an epidemic of smallpox and cholera and gave aid and well water to the sick. In 1783 a modest shrine was raised there by Sardar Baghel Singh, a Sikh military commander, and it later grew into the present white marble gurudwara with golden domes.
The Guru Granth Sahib is kept in the Darbar Sahib, the main prayer hall. Volunteers in the Langar Hall cook and serve free meals to thousands each day, with everyone seated together on the floor. A holy pool, whose water devotees regard as healing, holds colourful fish, and the Baba Baghel Singh Museum covers Sikh history through paintings, documents, weapons and manuscripts.
