The story

Gurdwara Antaryamta Sahib in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala district, marks an episode from the early life of Guru Nanak. After he came back from his disappearance in the Bein river and declared that there was no Hindu and no Musalman, Nawab Daulat Khan and his maulvi invited him to join their namaz. He stood without bowing, and when asked why, he told them their minds had wandered during the prayer, after which they bowed to him. The shrine stands where that prayer is said to have taken place.

The building has two levels, a large central dome and small chhatris, and combines Sikh and Mughal elements. A wide forecourt lined with palms is surrounded by rooms where pilgrims can stay overnight. The Guru Granth Sahib is kept in the main hall, there is a sarovar for ritual bathing, and langar is served to all. Guru Nanak's Gurpurab is the busiest day of the year.
