01 — The story

The story

Gurdwara Sri Ber Sahib is the chief place of worship in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala district, and stands on the western bank of the Kali Bein rivulet about half a kilometre from the old town. It marks the jujube (ber) tree under which Guru Nanak used to sit in meditation after his morning bath, before going to his duties at the state storehouse. One morning he left his clothes with an attendant, entered the stream and was not seen for three days; when he came out about 2 km away, at the place now called Sant Ghat, he declared that there is no Hindu and no Musalman. The episode is regarded as the start of his mission.

The present building was raised with the support of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala. Bhai Arjan Singh of Bagarian laid its foundation stone on 25 February 1937, and Maharaja Yadavinder Singh of Patiala dedicated it on 26 January 1941. A square domed room sits above the sanctum, small domes mark the roof corners, and the Guru Granth Sahib rests on a white marble canopied seat approached through a passage decorated with floral mosaic. A large fair is held each November for Guru Nanak's birth anniversary.
