01 — The story

The story

Panch Mandir is a Hindu temple complex in Kapurthala made up of five small shrines, arranged so that all five main idols are visible from its silver entrance door. It was built during the rule of Sardar Fateh Singh Ahluwalia, and its design was thought notable enough for a replica to be kept in a museum in Lahore, Pakistan. The idol of the Sun God catches the first light of the morning.

Across the complex devotees worship Shiva as a linga, the Ram Darbar, Lakshmi Narayan, Radha Krishna, Hanuman, Durga and Kali, as well as Baba Balak Nath, Baba Lal Dayal and Shani Dev. A separate Panch Mukhi Shiva shrine is believed to grant wishes to those who pray there during the monsoon months. A large hall on the premises is used for weddings and community events, and Maha Shivratri, Navratri and Janmashtami are the main festivals.
