01 — The story

The story

Gurdwara Sri Sehra Sahib, in the Sultanpur Lodhi area of Kapurthala district, takes its name from the sehra, the ornate headdress tied on a groom before a Sikh wedding. In 1604 Guru Arjan Dev halted here with the marriage party of his son, the future Guru Hargobind, and the sehrabandi ceremony was performed at this spot before the procession moved on.

The shrine is an octagonal chamber topped by a dome, set in a compound paved with brick. Asa di Var is recited each morning, and visitors may join in seva, from preparing langar to keeping the premises clean. Baisakhi and the Gurpurabs, above all Guru Nanak's birth anniversary, bring special kirtan, ardas and a Nagar Kirtan procession through the streets, and the building is lit with oil lamps after dark.
