The story

Gurdwara Bebe Nanaki Ji in Sultanpur Lodhi, a subdivision town of Kapurthala district, honours Bebe Nanaki, the elder sister of Guru Nanak. Sikhs regard her as the first person to recognise her brother's spiritual calling and as his first follower, and she is credited with urging him to express his teaching through music, the root of the kirtan tradition. The old three-storey house in Mohalla Chhimbian, believed to be the home of Nanaki and her husband Jai Ram, remained private property, so a separate memorial was planned.

Its foundation stone was laid on 13 November 1970, and the gurdwara was raised by the Bebe Nanaki Istri Satsang Charitable Trust, chaired by Bibi Balvant Kaur of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. The large main hall has the Guru Granth Sahib on a white marble palki at the far end, and a second copy is kept in a small room representing Nanaki's home. A square chamber with arched copings rises above the sanctum, with small domes at the roof corners. Sukhmani Sahib and Asa di Var are recited daily, and langar is served.
