01 — The story

The story

Gurdwara Sri Sant Ghat Sahib stands on the bank of the Kali Bein at Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district, not far from Gurdwara Ber Sahib. Sikh tradition holds that Guru Nanak, who had gone into the stream near Ber Sahib and vanished for three days, came out here, roughly 2 km upstream. At this spot he is believed to have uttered the Mool Mantar and declared that God is neither Hindu nor Muslim, after which he set out on his long journeys.

In Maharaja Ranjit Singh's time the shrine was placed in the care of Udasi mahants. The original structure was later wrecked by floods, and new buildings were put up under the direction of three religious leaders: Sant Udham Singh, Jathedar Sant Singh Lasuri and Sant Sadhu Singh Nirmala. Beside the gurdwara is the Sant Sarovar, a pond where Guru Nanak is said to have bathed and whose water devotees consider healing. The complex has a langar hall serving vegetarian meals to all, and a collection of manuscripts, paintings and other Sikh relics.
