The story

Gloria Church, formally Our Lady of Glory, stands in Byculla, Mumbai, and continues a Roman Catholic foundation that ranks among the oldest in the city. The first church of Nossa Senhora da Glória was put up by Portuguese Franciscans in 1632 at the foot of Mazagaon hill, with funds from the De Souza e Lima family, owners of Mazagaon island, which they had acquired from the King of Portugal in 1572. That building was pulled down in 1911.

The present church, built in 1911–13 at Byculla, is in the English Gothic Revival style. In 2019 its restoration received an Award of Merit from UNESCO, under the Asia-Pacific heritage conservation awards. Filmmakers have often used it as a location, notably Manmohan Desai for Amar Akbar Anthony (1977).
