The story

The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is the oldest museum in Mumbai, opened in 1872 as the Victoria and Albert Museum. Its present name honours Dr. Bhau Daji Lad, a scholar and social reformer of the city. It stands in Byculla.

Its permanent displays use dioramas, small clay figures, old maps and photographs, lithographs and rare printed books to show how Bombay and its people lived from the closing decades of the 18th century into the early 20th, along with fine and decorative arts. Since a museum trust was formed in 2003, the collection has grown to cover the city's art from the 19th century to the present, including contemporary work, and the museum holds exhibitions through the year for artists at every stage.
