The RBI Monetary Museum is run by the Reserve Bank of India in Mumbai and covers the history of money and banking in the country. It was inaugurated in 2004 by President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, and follows the story from barter through coins issued from about the 6th century BCE to today's paper money and monetary policy.
The museum has six sections. 'Curiosities and the Idea of Money' looks at the concept of money and shows coins from early times; others deal with Indian coinage, paper money, the change from coins to notes, the security features of current notes under 'Know Your Currency', and the bank's role in the economy under 'RBI and You'. Panels are in English and Hindi, and an interactive screen shows live foreign-exchange, share and commodity prices.
