Jijamata Udyaan, still widely called Victoria Gardens or the Byculla Zoo, is a 50-acre garden and zoo in Byculla, at the heart of Mumbai, and the city's oldest public garden. The Agri-Horticultural Society of Western India began it on 33 acres of the Mount Estate in 1861, moving plants from an earlier garden at Sewri, and Lady Frere opened it on 19 November 1862. The municipal corporation took over in 1873, and in 1890 fifteen acres were added for the zoo. It was renamed after Independence for Jijamata, mother of Shivaji.
The grounds are the only green space in the city with Palladian architecture. They hold the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, a Greco-Roman style building put up in Lady Frere's memory, a black marble equestrian statue of King Edward VII moved here from near the university, and the David Sassoon clock tower.
