01 — The story

The story

Magen David Synagogue stands in Byculla, in south-central Mumbai, and is one of the landmarks of the city's Jewish community. David Sassoon, a prominent Baghdadi Jewish merchant, founded it in the mid-19th century, at a time when the community in Bombay was growing quickly.

Since then it has been both the place of worship and the social centre for generations of the families who first gathered here, offering prayer, religious learning and community life. Its distinctive building and long history make it a reminder of the many faiths that have lived side by side in Mumbai.
