01 — The story

The story

Saifee Masjid, known officially as the Ghurrat ul Masajid, serves the Dawoodi Bohra community as a mosque in Bhendi Bazaar, South Mumbai. Syedna Taher Saifuddin, the community's 51st leader, laid its foundation stone in 1923 and opened it in 1926, when it was the largest community mosque of its day. As part of the Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment, it was rebuilt from 2018 and reopened by Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin on 25 September 2023.

The design blends Indian, Indo-Islamic and Neoclassical elements. The mosque measures about 34.5 m by 26.7 m and holds around 5,000 worshippers, with two ornamented minarets and a main entrance modelled on the Bab ul-Futuh. Burmese teak from the original building was reused in doors, windows, columns and beams, alongside Makrana marble, mosaics, chandeliers hand-made in Czechoslovakia and Quranic inscriptions. Date palms shade the courtyard, rainwater is harvested, and solar panels power the lights of the utility building.
