The story

The Mumba Devi temple in Bhuleshwar, south Mumbai, is dedicated to Mumba, a local form of the mother goddess and the patron of the city, which takes its name from her. She was the deity of the Koli fishing people, the first inhabitants of Bombay's seven islands, and her name is popularly read as Maha Amba, Great Mother.

The first shrine stood near Bori Bunder, where Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is now, and was pulled down in the 18th century, after which a new temple went up at Bhuleshwar. The present image is a black stone figure, robed and decked in a silver crown, gold necklace and nose stud. Set among the steel and cloth markets, the temple is visited by hundreds of worshippers every day and is a regular stop for visitors to the city.
