The story

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, formerly Victoria Terminus, is the great railway station of south Mumbai and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Designed by the British architect F. W. Stevens, it took ten years to build, cost over 260,000 pounds sterling, and was finished in 1887. Its style mixes Victorian Italianate Gothic with Indian elements. The site belongs to rail history too: India's first passenger train left Bori Bunder for Thane in 1853.

The centrepiece is a ribbed octagonal dome topped by a female figure holding a torch in one hand and a spoked wheel in the other. Side wings with corner turrets frame the courtyard, the facades are full of pointed arches and windows, and lions and tigers guard the entrance. The station still handles hundreds of long-distance and suburban trains and around 30 lakh commuters every day, from 11 long-distance and 8 suburban platforms.
