01 — The story

The story

Gita Bhawan stands on the Ganga in the Swarg Ashram area of Rishikesh. Swami Sivananda laid its foundations in 1936, and the place also goes by the name Guru Shri Ram Sukh Dasji Ashram. Verses of the Bhagavad Gita are painted across its walls, and the complex includes a Laxmi Narayan temple and an old banyan tree wrapped in prayer threads.

Its library holds Gita Press editions of Hindu texts, versions of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, books on yoga and old manuscripts, and scholars come to study the Gita. The ashram has about 1,000 rooms for pilgrims, offered at low cost or free, and a satsang hall where saints hold daily talks, meditation and bhajans.
