The story

Ghatigaon Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over 511 sq km to the west of Gwalior, reaching as far as the Tigra Dam and taking in part of its reservoir. It was set up in 1981 to protect habitat for the great Indian bustard.

The land falls within the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forest ecoregion and is mostly low scrub and woodland. Khair is the commonest tree, alongside tendu and reonjha, while the shrub layer has Zizyphus and grasses such as Eragrostis, Aristida and Apluda. Besides many bird species, the sanctuary supports blackbuck, chital, wild boar and striped hyena.
