Tigra Dam holds back the Sank River some 23 km from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, forming a freshwater reservoir that supplies the city as well as local villages for irrigation and household use. The dam is 24 metres high and 1,341 metres long.
The first dam here, built in 1916, failed on 19 August 1917 when water seeped into its sandstone foundations, killing about 1,000 people downstream. It was rebuilt in 1927 and partly failed again in 1970. The area later became good habitat for birds and was included in the Ghatigaon Wildlife Sanctuary in 1981. Tigra is a popular tourist spot, especially in the monsoon when the water is highest, and boating and other water sports are popular.
