01 — The story

The story

Teli ka Mandir stands on a high point inside Gwalior Fort, which makes it visible from many parts of the old fortified town. Dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and the Matrikas, it has been dated by scholars to somewhere in the 8th or early 9th century CE.

Its design is unusual for a Hindu temple: the sanctum is rectangular rather than square, and the building combines the Nagara style with the Valabhi form, in the regional Gurjara-Pratihara manner. Scholars admire the way its proportions follow harmonic ratios, and Hermann Goetz called it a masterpiece of late Gupta art. Gwalior is well connected by road, rail and air, and the Bateshwar and Naresar temple groups lie in the wider region.
