The story

Dakhni Sarai, also spelt Dakhini Sarai, is a Mughal caravanserai on the outskirts of Mallian Kalan in Punjab. It stands on the old highway between Agra and Lahore, now little used, along which the Mughals built sarais at regular intervals to shelter travellers and caravans. No foundation inscription survives, but its style is close to that of the Wazir Khan Mosque, suggesting the 1630s and perhaps the same patron, Wazir Khan; other sources credit Ali Mardan Khan in 1640. A leper colony for 300 patients was set up here in 1870.

The quadrangle measures 180 by 172 m, with thirty rooms along each side of the courtyard. Great gateways on the east and west have a central arch between smaller recessed ones and two storeys of triple openings with balconies above; traces of jali screens survive on the eastern gate. Octagonal bastions topped by chhatris stand at their ends. To the south-west, a walled mosque has three domes and two minarets.
