01 — The story

The story

Geeta Mandir is a Hindu temple in Jalandhar devoted to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. It predates Indian independence and was built in the early twentieth century, with its decorative work carried out by craftsmen over several years.

Passages from the Gita are inscribed on the walls, and the building combines traditional Indian forms, with domes, arches and carving, with some modern touches. Besides daily worship and scripture recitation, the temple works as a community centre, holding religious and cultural events through the year, yoga and meditation classes, and charitable activities. Its grounds are planted with gardens, and it keeps a collection of religious texts.
