St. Mary's Cathedral in Jalandhar is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar. The original church was consecrated and opened in 1847, and when the diocese was created in 1971 it was raised to cathedral status under the formal title Cathedral of St. Mary, the Immaculate Conception.
A rebuilding began in 1987, and the present cathedral was inaugurated in 1989. Its design pairs Gothic forms such as spires, pointed arches and stained-glass windows with Indian decorative work, and the facade is striped in white and pink, which makes it easy to pick out among the surrounding buildings. Inside are carefully made altars and paintings of Biblical scenes. The cathedral is the centre of Catholic worship and community life in the city.
