01 — The story

The story

The City Palace of Alwar, also called Vinay Vilas Palace, stands in the centre of the city; Raja Bakhtawar Singh had it built in 1791. It combines Mughal and Rajput styles, and its main courtyard holds marble pavilions set on lotus-shaped bases.

The Sheesh Mahal with its mirror work, the Diwan-e-Aam for public audiences and the Diwan-e-Khas for the royal family are among its best-known parts, and the Salim Sagar tank lies within the complex. Walls and ceilings are decorated with murals and mirrorwork, and the upper levels offer wide views over Alwar. Government offices use the ground floor, while the floors above hold the Government Museum, with royal armour, furniture and manuscripts.
