01 — The story

The story

Set inside St. Jerome Fort in Daman, this church grew out of an older chapel built in 1627 under Portuguese rule. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Sea, or Stella Maris, whom Catholics regard as the protector of sailors, and it was raised with Portuguese mariners in mind.

Outside, the church has plain white walls and a blue and white dome. The interior mixes European and Indian styles, with carvings, murals, stained glass, three domes, and paintings and sculptures on the life of Christ. Several chapels hold religious statues, among them a figure of Mary holding the infant Jesus.
