01 — The story

The story

St. Jerome Fort in Daman was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century to defend their territory against attack. It sits on a rocky rise above the Arabian Sea, and ivy and bougainvillaea grow over its outer walls.

The fort is a clear example of Portuguese military building, with thick walls, solid ramparts and bastions positioned to resist cannon fire. Its corridors recall the conflicts of the colonial era, and from the walls there are wide views across the sea.
