The story

The Church of Our Lady of Dolours in Wadala, Mumbai, is a Roman Catholic church with a statue of the Pieta as its centrepiece. Wadala was once a wilderness of a few villages set among salt pans and marshy fields. In 1853 Fr J. Braz Fernandes, then vicar at Dadar, put up a small chapel here for Catholics across a wide area, from Matunga and Sewri to Antop Hill.

A church replaced it, blessed on 17 October 1937, and the parish was formed in 1941. In 1948 it passed with its school, St. Joseph's, to the Salesians of Don Bosco, as the first parish they ran in the archdiocese. Most parishioners, especially the original villagers of Wadala and Gowari, are Bombay East Indians, with others from Goa and Mangalore. Urgent repairs were carried out from 1994 to 1996, and a relic of Don Bosco was displayed here on 13 August 2011.
