Chaitya Bhoomi, beside Dadar Chowpatty in Mumbai, marks the place where B. R. Ambedkar, principal architect of the Indian Constitution and leader of the revival of Buddhism in India, was cremated. It is a Buddhist chaitya and memorial, and his followers regard it as a place of pilgrimage. Every year on 6 December, the anniversary of his death, known as Mahaparinirvan Diwas, millions come to pay respects, along with the state's political leaders. The state government grades it an A-class tourism and pilgrimage site.
The square building is topped with a small dome and divided into a ground floor and a mezzanine. Inside, a circular marble-floored enclosure about 1.5 metres high holds a bust of Ambedkar and a statue of the Buddha. A stupa and a resting place for monks occupy the mezzanine. The entrance gate copies the gateway of the Sanchi stupa, and a replica Ashoka pillar stands within.
