01 — The story

The story

The Bandra Worli Sea Link is a cable-stayed road bridge laid across the open sea, joining Bandra in the western suburbs with Worli and the business districts of south Mumbai. Before it opened, the trip took 45 to 60 minutes; across the bridge it now takes roughly 7 to 10.

It carries eight lanes and is built of pre-stressed concrete and steel, with seismic arresters to help it withstand earthquakes. The design of its pylon towers had to deal with the difficult geology of the seabed. Engineering teams from five countries, India, China, Egypt, Switzerland and Canada, worked on the project. The bridge is a favourite subject for photographs against the skyline, particularly at sunset and after dark, when it is lit up.
