The story

Prabhadevi Temple, also called the Prabhavati Devi Temple, stands in the Prabhadevi area near Dadar in Mumbai, and the neighbourhood and its railway station, formerly Elphinstone Road, take their name from it. The idol of the goddess dates back to the 12th century, while the temple was built in 1715.

Historians say the goddess was first known as Shakambari Devi, the family deity of the Seuna Yadava king Bimba Raja of Devgiri. The idol was later taken to Karnataka, attacked by invaders, and brought back to Mahim Creek before being placed here. Local lore says she appeared in a dream to Shyam Nayak of the Pathare Prabhu community, one of Mumbai's earliest native groups, who then built the temple.
