The story

Rajgruha is the house B. R. Ambedkar built for his family in the Hindu Colony of Dadar, Mumbai, named after the ancient city of Rajgriha, now Rajgir. By the early 1930s his growing book collection had outgrown his home at Prabhadevi, so he planned a house with space for a library. Construction ran from 1931 to 1933, and he moved in that year with his wife Ramabai, his son Yashwant and other relatives; the family lived on the ground floor while his library and office took the first. He gathered over 50,000 books here, by his death among the biggest private libraries anywhere.

The ground floor of the three-storey building now holds a heritage museum in his memory, and the house became a heritage monument in 2013. It is an important place for Ambedkarite Buddhists and Dalits, and on 6 December huge numbers visit it before going on to Chaitya Bhoomi.
