The story

The Church of Our Lady of Salvation, widely called the Portuguese Church, stands on S. K. Bole Road in Dadar, Mumbai. Portuguese Franciscans founded it as Nossa Senhora da Salvação; historians believe it is the oldest church in the city, in existence by 1512, and it was rebuilt on a larger scale in 1651.

The present building was designed by the architect Charles Correa and built between 1974 and 1977. In place of the old steeples and ornate facade, Correa joined the altar, nave, baptistery and oratory under conical domes in bare, unplastered concrete, mixing roofed and open-air spaces. M. F. Husain painted the glass of the central roof in segments like stained glass, showing the loaves and fishes and Christ's death and resurrection, and Anjolie Ela Menon painted the Crucifixion for a side chapel, with Adam and Eve beside its altar.
