01 — The story

The story

The Church of Bom Jesus is a Portuguese-era church in Daman, built by colonists in the 16th century. Besides serving as a place of worship, it was meant to display the reach of colonial rule and of the church, and it went on to play a large part in the town's history and culture.

The building blends Portuguese and Indian styles. Its Baroque facade carries detailed carving, painted decoration, tall pillars and spires, while the interior has finely worked altars, motifs picked out in gold leaf and stained-glass windows.
