Sree Chenbagavalli Amman Temple at Payanam is dedicated to Chenbagavalli Amman, regarded as a form of Parvati. Her sanctum lies within the mandapam beneath the vimana and is carried on 17 pillars. The goddess holds a trident and a child. One shrine honours the people of Payanam whose labour built the temple.
A peepal tree, a banyan and the Chenbagavalli nursery school stand outside the main temple, which is run by a trust that also helps poor families in the village. The annual festival falls at the end of February or the start of March, when the goddess is carried in procession through Payanam and the town of Marthandam.
