The story

Thiruppathisaram, also called Thiruvanparisaram, is a village about 3.5 km north-east of Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district, known for its temple to Thiruvazhmarban, a form of Vishnu who carries Lakshmi on his chest. The temple is counted among the 108 Divya Desams and the Malayala Nattu Thiruppatigal. The village is honoured as the birthplace of Udaya Nangai, mother of the Vaishnava poet-saint Nammalvar.

The main image is 9 feet tall and made of Katusarkara Yogam, a paste of mustard and jaggery, so it is never given the ritual bath. The god holds the conch and discus. Paintings of the ten avatars of Vishnu decorate the Indra Kalyana Mandapam, and there are smaller shrines for Garuda, Ganesha, Rama, Nammalvar and Nataraja, with a bathing tank opposite. The deity's gold and diamond crown was once stolen and cut up; it was recovered but remains in pieces. King Kulashekhara and Thirumalai Nayak are credited with renovations.
