01 — The story

The story

CSI Home Church in Nagercoil grew out of the Christian mission that Rev. William Tobias Ringeltaube set up at Mylaudy in 1809. Rev. Richard Knill laid the foundation stone on 1 January 1818, and building moved forward after Rev. Charles Mault arrived in 1821. The land was given by General John Munro, then British Resident in Travancore, who acted as a go-between for the missionaries, the Madras government and the Travancore kingdom.

The church is built in the Greek style and measures 140 by 70 feet, with room for nearly 2,500 people, and it is counted among the oldest and biggest Protestant churches in South India. The linguist Robert Caldwell was married here in 1844.
